Observation Narrative
At this site, the Fagus grandifolia- Acer barbatum alliance of slopes and ravines along the Nottoway River descends to occupy a well drained, elevated flood terrace. The canopy trees are very tall and well formed and little if any disturbance is evident. The stand is part of a fairly extensive and essentially mature hardwood forest inhabiting steeper and less accessible sites along the river. Trees measured (dbh in cm.): Fagus grandifolia (70, 65, 57), Acer barbatum (55), Carya cordiformis (55), Liriodendron tulipifera (45).
Plot location: Elevated flood terrace along Nottoway River, 0.45 miles east of Tower Road.
